Budapest Easter Mass

There are several beautiful Easter masses in Budapest, but the most beautiful of them all is probably in the majestic St Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest downtown. Please feel free to attend the Easter mass if you are on an Easter weekend break in Hungary.

If you do join the locals for the Easter mass, please take into consideration that this event is for participants not stand by tourists.

The Easter mass is in all probability the most festive and complicated Catholic mass of the year in Hungary, which takes place in the morning of Easter Sunday. The Sunday Easter mass is preceded by the Friday Vigil and the Resurrection Procession.

Maundy Thursday at the Budapest Basilica:
Maundy Thursday, aka Easter Thursday is the day before Good Friday. Masses at the St Stephens Basilica are at the following hours:
10 am mass
6 pm mass
8 pm lamentation and vigil in the Holy Right Chapel until Good Friday morning
Please note: the regular Budapest Basilica Thursday Organ concerts are not scheduled for Easter Thursday.

Good Friday at the Budapest Basilica:
Good Friday (also known as Easter Friday) is the day before Holy Saturday, i.e. Easter weekend. Events at the St Stephens Basilica start at the following hours:
9 am bearing on the cross
6 pm revealing the cross, adoring the cross, choir songs by the Basilica Choir, communion
8 pm lamentation and vigil in the Holy Right Chapel until Good Friday morning
Please note: the regular Budapest Basilica Monday Organ concerts are not scheduled for Good Friday.

Holy Saturday at the Budapest Basilica:
Holy Saturday is the day before Easter Sunday. Events at the St Stephens Basilica are at the following hours:
6 pm Easter Vigil, blessing the fire, Easter candle, joyful Easter songs, crossing, resurrection procession

Easter Sunday at the Budapest Basilica:
Easter Sunday masses at the St Stephens Basilica are at the following hours:
8 am mass, blessing the foods on Easter Sunday
9 am student mass on Easter Sunday
11 am Special Easter Mass with the Hungarian cardinal (also aired on television in live sessions)
12 pm mass on Easter Sunday at noon
6 pm mass on Easter Sunday
7:30 pm mass on Easter Sunday in the Holy Right Chapel of the Basilica
