Budapest Museums celebrate their “museumness” on the Night of Museums Festival: such a festival in Budapest may sound boring for those who feel in a vacuum in museums, but this night is special with lots of things to do and see. To make things more fun, Budapest has over a hundred museums, and most of them participate in the night festival. The Night of the Museums is one of the best things to do in Budapest in June. Not sure? Just head to the Buda Castle to get a feel for it.

Date: June 21, 2013
Museums: participating museums all over the city of Budapest (approx. 80!)
Although Ben Stiller won’t be rushing around in Budapest and neither will be any T-Rex coming to life, the Night of the Museums is still a very nice cultural event and festival. If only there were shorter queues…

The annual cultural festival is about celebrating the tokens of our cultural inheritance, the intelligence of humankind, and finally being able to look around in museums late at night – without breaking and entering!

Sadly, as this is a major event in Hungary and crowds flock to the museums, you won’t have the chance to play at museum thieves or guards with flashy torches, but it would be fun… maybe an idea for Halloween? But enough of night dreaming, and back to June to the well-groomed ‘Night of the Museums’ festival and the hundreds of programmes that make the event more colourful.

Many of the museums all over Hungary, including Budapest, will stay open until very late (usually until 2:30 am or so) for this annual event.

But not only that, there will be special programmes too, in recent years we have seen Indian dance at the Museum of Applied Arts, jazz concert in the Hungarian National Gallery, etc.

You will have a chance to get into the most prestigious Hungarian museums and art galleries at a tiny fraction of the real costs by buying a dirt cheap museum multipass (arm band), which is valid for entering at the participating institutions, such as

Armbands are approx. HUF 1,500 for adults and HUF 600 for under 18 (free for kids under 6). The one night multipass includes the entrance fees, and normally the public transport costs for crawling between the museums.

More details about the Budapest Nights of the Museums on the official website.

See some photos of the Night of the Museums festival in Budapest, or the video of the video installation here

The list of the participating museums is very long, very versatile.

The Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery are both in the Buda Castle and open their gates with special programmes on the Night of the Museums.

Plus, as it is a summer event with nice weather, even the courtyards of the Royal Palace are included in the festivities on the Night of the Museums, which are beautifully lit. Obviously, this is one of the most popular choices for many tourists visiting Budapest.

Concerts, shows, talks and games are very much part of the event. It is a great feeling to be amongst nice and quirky things to listen to music, or to see a performance. We only wish it would be a weekly event rather than an annual festival.

The beautiful 19th century building of the Danube Palace in Budapest is the regular host of the Hungarian themed symphony concerts, which centre around world famous pieces of classical music strongly related to the Hungarians or Hungarian culture, like the Chardash of Monti or Long live the Hungarians! by Strauss.

The symphony concert is not only Hungarian themed with its programme, but the concert is also a Cimbalom Show, as a truly Hungarian specialty, one of the oldest Hungarian musical instruments, the Tsimbalom (hammered dulcimer played by striking 2 beaters against the strings).

The Danube Palace (Duna Palota in Hungarian) has a very central location and a beautiful romantic interior, which is worth a short walk from Vorosmarty Square in Zrinyi Street.

Dates of the Danube Palace Symphony Concerts, Budapest

Every symphony concert at the Danube Palace starts at 8 pm and finishes about at 10 pm. The classical music concert consists of 2 parts, 40-45 minutes each, plus an interval.

The Danube Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andras Deak

The Danube Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1961 and consists of 60 highly trained musicians. Not only do the musicians of the Danube Symphony Orchestra work together in this orchestra, but in several chamber orchestras as well. Besides their permanent conductor András Deák, they are often conducted by other Hungarian and foreign conductors. Many Hungarian and foreign guest artists have performed with the orchestra, including Giuseppe di Stefano from Italy, James Galway, a flautist from Ireland and Ray Charles, the jazz star from the USA. They have given performances in GermanyFranceSwitzerland, the Netherlands and Italy.

Their repertoire covers almost every musical style from the Baroque music to music of the 20th century. Their permanent concert hall is the theatre of the Danube Palace, Budapest (Duna Palota; Zrínyi utca 5.) Apart from the concerts for adults and children, they regularly play at various musical events held in Budapest. They are frequent guests at the Franz Liszt Music Academy, at the Vigado Concert Hall, at the Stephanie Palace (Istvan Palota), and at the Budapest Congress and Convention Centre.

Hungary is the regular host of  the Hungarian Grand Prix on its Formula 1 car race track every July or so in the summer time. The Hungarian Grand Prix race circuit is officially known as the Hungaroring Motorsport and Driving Centre, which takes its share of the series of Formula 1 car races every year.

Hungarian Grand Prix Circuit Map

Hungarian Grand Prix Circuit Map

The Hungarian Grand Prix takes place on the Hungaroring motor racing circuit in the village of Mogyorod, near Budapest. There are regular shuttles from Budapest to Mogyorod, buses, and even helicopters, and there are some apartments to rent in Mogyorod too. Some even camp in Mogyorod during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The circuit of the Hungarian Grand Prix is in a valley, with good overviews and lots of twists and bumps. Most of the races were on wet and dusty circuits, with the exception of the first wet race in 2006 (for 20 straight years there were only dry GPs)

The Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix is usually in summer, often on hot days in July. July is often hot so tickets in the roofed Gold sector are popular.

The atmosphere is great, the tracks are roaring, on the first day (or pre-day) you can walk around the pits, which is really a great feeling to get so close to the finetuned stallions. Since not all F1 tracks offer a pit lane walkabout, this may be your great time to get closer to the Formula race teams working on the cars.

Buying Tickets for the Hungarian GP

You can buy tickets online for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix on the official website on Hungaroring, general admission starts at approx. €85 (for a Sunday entry), up to €405 for the whole Grand Prix Weekend in the Gold sector.

Best Hotels for the Hungarian Grand Prix

Although there are some nice rooms and rudimentary camp sites by the F1 Hungaroring tracks, many foreign and local spectators book a hotel in Budapest, rather than on the spot by the Circuit.

Hungarian F1 Village - Mogyorod - photo by Cameron Rogers

Hungarian Formula 1 Village – Mogyorod – Cameron Rogers Photography

The Formula 1 Circuit is near Mogyorod, a Hungarian village, which is approx. 18 km (11.18 miles) from the city of Budapest. Campsites and nearby hotels may get booked up 2 months in advance, so if you have not booked your rooms yet, hurry up for a great value of money.

So what are the best hotel and hostel choices for a good value accommodation in Budapest, if you are heading for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, but want to stay somewhere downtown Budapest, yet close to the free shuttles from Arpad Bridge Budapest to Mogyorod Hungaroring:

  • Adina Apartment Hotel close to the Lehel square metro station (M3) – connected to the free shuttle at Arpad Bridge, Budapest leaving for Hungaroring Mogyorod
  • Aventura Boutique Hostel, a few min walk from Nyugati Train Station – connected to the free shuttle at Arpad Bridge, Budapest leaving for Hungaroring Mogyorod
  • Easy Hotel Budapest Oktogon is about 6 min walk from the Nyugati Train station M3 metro station – connected to the free shuttle at Arpad Bridge, Budapest leaving for Hungaroring Mogyorod
  • Budapest Danubius Hotel Astoria M2 metro station – connected to the suburban train from Ors Vezer Square to the Hungarian GP in Mogyorod
  • Budapest City Central Astoria M2 metro station – connected to the suburban train from Ors Vezer Square to the Hungarian GP in Mogyorod

How to Get to the Hungarian Grand Prix?

Hungarian GP - Stands before Start - photo by Cameron Rogers

Hungarian Grand Prix before Start – Cameron Rogers Photography

Please keep in mind, that traffic jamsfrom Budapest to Mogyorod are quite frequent because of the Hungarian Grand Prix  (and also because of the generally increased weekend traffic). There are free shuttle buses from Arpad Bridge bus station (near the Arpad Bridge M3 blue metro station) to the Formula 1 race circuit in Mogyorod, leaving from Arboc Street.

You can imagine that not only the buses are packed but Budapest taxis are kept quite busy too resulting in a really slowly flowing traffic (and if you are sitting in a cab it will be really expensive to get to the Hungaroring F1 tracks in Mogyorod village from the city of Budapest – so budget travellers should definitely avoid getting in a taxi, or try to join other fellow travellers to save some money.). Posh visitors can even use a helicopter tour from Budapest (again, not cheap, around 75,000 HUF or so)

Foods and Drinks at the Grand Prix in Hungary

If you are on a tight budget, bring your own foods and drinks to save some Hungarian forints for Budapest sightseeing (there are loads of attractions to see once you are in beautiful Budapest). You may feel hot during the Hungarian Grand Prix: July in Hungary can be quite hot, between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius easily. If you feel overheated, just walk over to the aqua park pools right next to the Hungarian Formula 1 race circuit in Mogyorod (a cool water theme park with lots of slides).

Many of the seats at the Hungarian Grand Prix have no shades. Sitting for hours under the beating sun can make even the most devoted fans dry. Have lots and lots of drinks and a good safari hat / sunshade to protect your head.

As some of the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix reviews on TripAdvisor travel site note

“I found grandstands on the main straight particularly good, but the general admission area around the track is also interesting. Note that you cannot walk around the whole track that – only about half way.” (F1 Hungarian Grand Prix review from 2012)

“The spectator area is compact, easy to navigate and everything you need during a day at the races is available. The ticket prices are steep if you want to see the whole weekend, but those of us travelling on a shoestring do have an option too. For Fridays’ practice sessions, you can get tickets even to the best grand stands for 30 euros or less. That’s a real bargain for experiencing 3 hours of F1 cars plus F2 and Porsche Cup qualifications totaling up to some 10 hours of top motorsport entertainment.” (F1 Hungarian Grand Prix review from 2011)
