St Martin’s Day (the day of Martin of Tours) is a Goose & Wine gastro and cultural day at Vajdahunyad Castle, the home of the Hungarian Agricultural Museum with many children activities. Budapest on St Martin’s Day (weekend in fact) will offer many things to do you can choose from.
Venue: Vajdahunyad Castle, Budapest (the home of the Hungarian Agricultural Museum in the City Park / Varosliget)
Date: 11 November, 2012
The Márton Napi Events (St Martin’s Day) range from goose gastronomy through new wines and folk traditions related to Szt Marton Day. There is also a nice little Martin’s Day Crafts and Home Produce Fair where you can buy some nice gifts, home made specialties, wines, etc.
You can try delicious Hungarian goose dishes like rice and goose (ludaskasa), roast goose leg with cabbage and potato (sült libacomb káposztával és burgonyával), fried goose skin with fat (libatepertő) eaten with fresh bread and vegetables.
Besides goose, you can try some special Hungarian meats, which are the meats of old Hungarian breeds, like the pork of Mangalitsa (the furry pig), the beef of the Grey Cattle (szürkemarha) etc.
In the St Martin’s Day Playhouse, children can sing, dance, do crafts, act out traditional Hungarian games, try their hands in old skills related to goose keeping (like how to feed goose with corns by first cleaning corns with your hands by grinding two corns together – kukoricamorzsolás) etc. Kids can make ginger bread figures, try to write with the feather of the goose (old style quill), make pictures from corn, make lanterns from pumpkin (there is a small procession with lanterns around the Vajdahunyad Castle)
In addition, there are guided tours in the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture, wine history tours, etc. (available with registration on the spot)
