Hungarian Folk Dances are very colourful, vivid, happy and will surely make your legs want to move too. In the unique, award winning Hungarian Folk Dance shows you can see the beautiful Hungarian folk costumes, authentic Hungarian dresses (still inspiring modern fashion motifs), you can listen to the merry-fast Hungarian folk music contrasted by slow-contemplative and even bitter or bittersweet tones, and last but not least, you can see the traditional Hungarian folk dance steps of how our ancestors danced many centuries ago (men and women together, men only and women only dances too).

Hungarian folk dancers – balancing bottles with great skills

Watching a  Hungarian Folk Dance Show is a real treat: you can see the best Hungarian dancers, i.e. the dancers of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, and the likewise famous and excellent Danube Folk Ensemble. If you want to see something more modern, we recommend the performances of the Rajko Folk Ensemble where folk dances, Gypsy dances and jazz ballet motifs are fused in a truly fascinating folk show. The more traditional folk dances and music are performed by the  Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and the Danube Folk Ensemble.

Highlights of the Hungarian Folk Dance Show

  • Vivid, exuberant and authentic Magyar folk dances (including the world famous Czardas): from the Middle Ages and from the 18th – 19th century (some of them collected in tiny Hungarian villages)
  • The best Hungarian folk dancers: multiple award winning folk dance ensembles (established in the 1950s).
  • Beautiful Folk costumes: authentic Hungarian embroidered costumes
  • Folk Dance choreography: the various folk dances of Hungary’s regions are fused into a spectacular folk show: beautiful, fun, amazing!
  • Affordable prices – the Hungarian Folk shows are great value for money, tickets starting from 14 Euros
  • Very central location – the Danube Palace is a 2 min walk from the Chain Bridge, downtown Budapest. Budai Vigado, the other venue of folk shows is about 15 min from the city center.
  • Romantic Budapest: the shows are truly romantic, as is the city of Budapest.

Rajko Folk Ensemble

Rajko Folk Ensemble

The Rajko Folk Ensemble (founded in 1952) performs lively Gypsy – Hungarian folk showsby fusing traditional Hungarian dances with Gypsy dances and music, incorporating more modern motifs from jazz ballet. The world famous Rajko Folk Orchestra accompanies the dancers of the Rajko Folk Ensemble: the talented Gypsy band is a unique musical experience in itself. Like Jewish Klezmer music, Gypsy musicians learn the tricks of the trade in the family and community, carrying the musical heritage through many dynasties. They play by the ear, no music to guide their strokes. Virtuoso improvisation? Sure! The grand orchestra of Rajko Band consists of about 50 members, while the chamber orchestra version, you will likely see at the Folk Show, is 6-8 musicians. They will showcase their diverse repertoire from classical music to gypsy folk and operetta.

The Folk Show / Concert are in the Danube Palace (Duna Palota) at 5 Zrinyi utca, (District V.). Every show starts at 8 pm in the evening, and consists of two 40-45 minute performances, with an intermission.

Basically, the Rajko Folk Show runs on a regular basis from May 1 to November 1 every Friday at 8pm in the Danube Palace.
